Media Tape Data Destruction: Essential Steps to Protect Your Information

Magnetic tapes store enormous amounts of data and are notoriously difficult to destroy securely. Here's what you need to know about tape destruction.

Magnetic tape media -- LTO, DAT, DLT, and older formats like 9-track and 8mm -- remains in use in enterprise backup environments and is commonly encountered during data center decommissions. Despite being 'old technology,' modern LTO tapes can hold 12TB or more per cartridge, making them high-priority destruction targets.

Simple cutting or breaking of tape cartridges is not sufficient destruction. The magnetic oxide coating on tape can be read even after physical damage. Effective destruction methods include: degaussing (which scrambles the magnetic domains), industrial shredding, and incineration.

Degaussing is fast and effective for all magnetic media including tape, HDDs, and floppy disks. However, it requires a degausser powerful enough to overcome the coercivity rating of the specific tape format. Older degaussers may not be effective against modern high-density tape formats.

Industrial shredding of tape cartridges -- both the media and housing -- provides visually verified destruction and produces shredded output that can be photographed or weighed as documentation.
