Small and medium-sized businesses often assume that formal IT asset disposition programs are only for large enterprises. This is a misconception with real consequences -- SMBs face the same data security laws and regulations, often with less IT staffing to manage compliance.

The good news: ITAD for SMBs is simpler than you might think. You don't need a dedicated IT security team or a complex internal process. What you need is a reliable certified vendor and a basic internal policy.

Start with a simple policy document that states: (1) all end-of-life devices must be processed by a certified ITAD provider, (2) no device containing company data may be donated, sold, or discarded without certified data destruction, and (3) certificates of destruction must be filed for a minimum of [X] years. That's it. Simple, defensible, and auditable.

For most SMBs, an annual or semi-annual pickup of accumulated equipment is the most efficient approach. Keep a box or pallet in your IT area where decommissioned equipment accumulates, then schedule a pickup when it reaches a reasonable volume.
